Ahli psikologi dari Barat telah mengkaji masalah lumba haram yang memfokus kepada perlumbaan kereta haram ini adalah kerana motosikal tidak sangat popular dalam budaya ini berbanding dengan kereta. Contoh, kajian yang dilakukan oleh Leigh (1996) dan Smart et al., (2010) melihat lumba haram adalah aktiviti anak muda yang ditandakan oleh pemberontakan terhadap ibu bapa dan pihak berkuasa.
